[XeTeX] xdCJK how to mix occasional Japanese with Chinese and English

Greetings,

Along with the bears around here, I'm coming out of deep lurk mode 
hibernation.

I've had more frequent success using XeLaTeX this time than in my past 
attempts, but I'm still struggling most of the time, a raw beginner.

I'm trying to typeset a 300 page English book that includes a lot of 
Chinese and occasional short strings of Japanese. I've been able to mix 
Chinese and English okay, but cannot apply a Japanese font in those few 
places where it is needed.

The PDF output from a minimal example looks like this:

Chinese 不怕慢只怕站。
Japanese omiage, futon お土xx 、布xx

The English and Chinese render properly.
The xx indicates an empty box. I want to use a Japanese font so that the 
proper kanji, 産  appears in the first, and 団appears in the second 
empty box.

Here is the prologue, a pruned version of what I am using for the book:

If I don't use the xeCJK package, the Japanese renders correctly in Ume 
Mincho, but the Chinese doesn't.

I'm stuck. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
