PATH and MANPATH extensions?

Hi all,

N.B.: Complete macOS and MacTeX noob here, please bear with me.

I'm about to install MacTeX and went through the available
documentation. In READ_ME_FIRST.pdf on page 5, I read:

The MacTeX installer performs extra tasks which aren't done when you
install with TeX Live's standard script. MacTeX extends PATH and
MANPATH so TeX binaries and man pages for the distribution are
    available within Unix shells.

Is it possible to know how these extensions are done? I have a possibly
non-standard terminal setup with homebrew/iterm2/bash and I want to make
sure that the env variables will be available in bash.

TIA. Best, Arash

P.S. Please keep me in CC as I'm not subscribed to this list.
