Makeindx

I suppose that this is really a Tex question rather than specific to Y&Y;
however, here goes.  When I use makeindx (2.11 or 2.12) I get an error "Out
of Core ... Aborting"  The source is from a book (> 500pp) which is
generating a rather large index. System is running under Win 98/DOS.  Has
anyone had a problem with large indexes?  As the program is circa 1993 maybe
it is compiled for a limited memory DOS environment?
