OK. Hmmm ... Well, let's see if we can get BibTeX to respond to you
from the command line, rather than from the menus ...

That is, as a test, create a test-bib folder (for example), copy ALL
the files you'll need: the .tex, .sty, .bib, .bst, etc. in there, and
then process the file first through LaTeX, to get the .aux file, and
then through BibTeX:

   c:\somefoldername c:\yandy\bibtex\bibtex.exe filename.aux

I'm afraid I have to run, otherwise, I'd fire up the laptop and get
the exact path for the latex.exe file -- but you can figure that out,
I think, based on the bibtex.exe model.

I've just been poking through old mail to try and see if/when I wrote
this up, because I think I recall running into the same problem --
that plain TeX kept butting in instead of LaTeX and BibTeX. So I left
the menus alone, and tried from the DOS prompt.

I'll try to look for notes I may have written down somewhere for
better details.
