But ... but ... ;-) There are lots of XP installations that people
have done so perhaps it was just fatal on your machine? Well, I'll
just have to deal with it when the time comes.

Oh, come now! The only weirdo I have is for phonetics -- and I don't
find it at all odd ;-) But keep in mind that I actually use the unix
box and TeXLive for typesetting -- the NT machine with Y&YTeX is for
client-based consulting work. Of course, the unixbox is running TL3,
while Y&YTeX is of a far more current vintage ;-)) But I digress ...

Isn't this where you then reactivate ATM (Deluxe), to control which
fonts are active and thus keep memory use down?

I think that's probably a given, since we have a bunch of other
software on the machine as well ... and assume that most of it will
work with XP ... a mighty big assumption ...
