I meant to add a very insightful diagnostic I got when I tried one last
thing tonight.  I tried to run DVIwindo with ALL the Type1 fonts removed
from folder \fonts and this is the message I got:

Font appears ANSI encoded (text), yet DVI file calls for non ANSI
char.  Apparent mismatch TFM encoding and outline font encoding.  Or
perhaps need '\input texnanasi' or 'input ansiancce'.

Would it tell you anything?
