DVIPSONE in Windows XP

David and Christina:

This appears to be "similar" to a problem which I have experienced.
Unfortunately, I have no solution that solves it.

On my new (since August) desktop Dell computer with Windows XP
I run YandY 2.2. I Tex a document and am able to preview the
dvi file and print it with no problem. However, when I try to generate
a ps file, via DVIPS and try to view the file with GSView it (GSView) does
not find the CM fonts - instead GSView makes font substitutions with Courier
fonts - so the output is awful looking. (FYI, I've attached the Ghostscript
messages at the end). For some letters, it produces no output. In no
situation have I been able to produce any "good looking" ps output.

Robin Fairbairns attempted to answer my earlier posting. However,
my question was not accurately or carefully stated. He suggested
that try reinstalling YandY, which I did - no solution. I will note
that my (older) laptop running XP, I have no problem creating ps files
(with DVIPS) and viewing them with GSView. By the way the ps files
so created (on the laptop) can be viewed on my desktop computer with GSView
- indeed, any postscript files can be properly viewed on my desktop, if they
are not created via DVIPS from the desktop installation.
Somehow it seems
that my desktop installation of YandY is not informing GSView about where
the CM fonts reside?? By the way my editor is WinEdt (could the problem lie
there?).

Or could it be that CM fonts are not installed on this installation of
YandY? (why was it installed on my laptop? why do my dvi files come out
fine?). I don't know, but I will follow developments from you and others
with interest.

Regards,

V. S. Prasad

p.s. (no pun intended) The DVIPSONE log states
"WARNING: Can't find font cmbx12 (and on substitute)"

Humph! I'm stumped, then. You know, someone once mentioned on this
list that they had to get a new printer driver when they did their XP
upgrade -- clearly, I'm doing the flail thing again, here but ... I
dunno ... is this a possibility? Does anyone remember any details on
this?

I see that ... can XP readers here do a quick test to see if they get
the report on-screen about the font processing, as David's Win98
sample shows? First thing, I figure, is to ensure that everyone else
does indeed get the report when they're running XP ...

Hmmm ... here's another flailing thought ... if you had 2.2 under
Win98, then surely you were using ATM for both font installation and
management, right? Well, you don't use it for installation under XP
but you _can_ use it for management under XP ... can you check to see
if the Y&YTeX font folder in the ATM is actually active? All, of
course, assuming ATM is in fact a presence on your XP machine ...

I'm running near the bottom of the barrel, now ;-(

For handy reference, I've left in the part of David's Win98 screen
report which shows the font processing stuff which he doesn't get
under XP.
