[XeTeX] get xetex to use best fonts

That is a bit of a problem. You could use the option
"ExternalLocation" (->documentation of fontspec) to specify the font
name.

This sounds as if xetex can't find the font. In miktex 2.7. it works
fine. Which tex system are you using?
