[XeTeX] Problem with subscripted digits, space out

Ok, so looks like I may have found a solution to the technical problem.
I've got fontspec loaded, and have created this command (for
"Sumerian"):
\newcommand{\smn}[1]{{\addfontfeature{LetterSpace=15}{#1}}}
and it seems to work (if anyone knows of pitfalls I should beware of,
please let me know). Just need to find or build a font with the
characters I need.
Thanks.

I'm typesetting text with MANY of these subscripts, and those
particular items, including the subscripts, need to be subscripted at
times, etc. It gets really messy.
I'd much rather use the native Unicode characters.

What's wrong with using u\textsubscript{0123456789} ?
