[XeTeX] Problem with subscripted digits, space out

I'm typesetting text with MANY of these subscripts, and those particular items, including the subscripts, need to be subscripted at times, etc. It gets really messy.
 
I'd much rather use the native Unicode characters.

What's wrong with using u\textsubscript{0123456789} ?
