Jens, you're also using "tipa" package. I tried using it with XeLaTeX but it didn't really work very well there, so I replaced it by the XeLaTeX way of doing it:

1) I downloaded an OpenType font that supports IPA (CharisSIL)
2) Whenever I was using tipa commands, I switched to CharisSIL and input UTF-8 IPA characters directly
