[XeTeX] consternation and confusion - xelatex is generating a blank page in the middle of my document

Well, I've donwloaded the test file, but the file texated.tex does not even compile here:

In gedit with the latex plugin, the run stops with an ominous sounding "malformed command", but I was not able to extract more useful info.
