[UK-TUG] TeX users in the UK and online payments

Dear Jay

I had an unpleasant surprise this morning. You've moved a motion that stops
UK TUG receiving or making online payments, effective from midnight 17
August until December this year. I'd be most grateful if you would tell us
why you have taken this step.

The first committee message since the AGM to mention paypal is your motion.
Jonathan Webley has been treasurer for nearly two years. Hence my surprise
that there's a problem with UK TUG's paypal account that is impossible to
rectify, whose solution is to discontinue online payments.

At present and until the AGM decides otherwise, UK TUG is a continuing
organisation that will have 2022 membership. Your motion reduces the power
of the AGM to continue UK TUG as it sees fit, and to distribute UK TUG's
assets as it sees fit.

I believe there's a place for a regular online meetings for TeX users in
the UK, and would like to promote that as the continuation or successor of
UK TUG. Online payments would be useful there, even if only for paying for
Zoom and other expenses.

with kind regards

Jonathan

APPENDIX
Text of motion by Jay Hammond, sent Monday 9 August, 10:14pm
====
that UKTUG take the three linked actions below.

       UKTUG closes its current paypal account forthwith.

      UKTUG updates the UKTUG website to reflect this change.

      UKTUG opens a fresh paypal account no sooner than December 2021,
if required for 2022 memberships.

The reason for the  motion:

The existing paypal account cannot be operated properly or securely,
is inaccessible to the treasurer. It seems impossible to rectify this
using the existing security credentials.
