OK. So I took "small2e.tex" and modified the line
	\section{Simple Text}
to read
	\begin{center}
	\pageheading{Simple Text}
	\end{center}
After this I ran
	pdflatex small2e
and I got an error message about "Undefined control sequence".

This leads me to conclude that your suggestion was at least incomplete
if not wrong. 

I admit that I did not use "gedit" but "vi" though this is not
relevant to the question in any way :-)
