pdfLaTeX uses Type1 fonts and needs probably *.pfm & *.pfd etc. files, whereas LaTeX uses MF fonts, i.e., *.tfm, *.pk fonts. Your system may not be having the required Type1 fonts. Get them and install at the proper place then they may work.
