For a begiiner, I think the best book is still "LaTeX--A Document 
Preparation System", by Leslie Lamport. At Thiruvananthapuram, you can ge 
it from Modern Book Center. Please also have a look at the TUGIndia LaTeX 
Primer, available for download from
