Yes, it does. I hadn't found the upstream issue, but I had just reached
the same conclusion, that the -links 2 is the source of the problem,
i.e., both the files and the dirs containing the files were being given
to tar at creation time.

I will try using the latest makeself release. --thanks, karl.
