    * The problem does NOT happen when using the same new binaries
      (built early on this morning) with an older checkout of the
      Master/texmf-dist, around Apr 30.

That makes it seem probable that the bug is in lua code somewhere rather
than your binary.  And since probably no other system has h2gtrm.ttf, no
one else would run into it.

Can you diff your texmf-dist's?  There won't be many lua files which
have changed.
