I used exactly the instructions used for TeX Live 2011. The
instructions are the same on the PPC machine as on the Intel Machine.

Leopard is OS X 10.5.8. This is the last system which runs on PPC machines
(as well as Intel machines).

Snow Leopard is OS X 10.6.8.

Lion is OS X 10.7.3. It is the current system for up to date folks.

Mountain Lion is OS X 10.8, to appear later this summer.

The last digit in these numbers is a minor upgrade number. Currently Apple
provides updates for Lion and Snow Leopard. The machine with problems
hasn't been updated or even used since we compiled MacTeX 2011. Note
that everything else in MacTeX 2012 compiles fine on the machine.
