Hi Angelo,
right, but not easy to avoid. Here we need not only the pdfTeX program but
also a latex.fmt, and I have no idea to build this with just the TL source
tree. I think Karl Berry has some tentative plans in this direction.

for all other current tests (including trip and trap) we need just the
program and a few input files available in the TL tree. The additional
tests for TeX & Co, that were present a few years ago, are gone (or rather
not yet integrated into the TL2009 build system).
