I do all (8 at the moment) builds in separate clean systems, so I
noticed this problem in tests phase and also in xindy/asy builds.
To override it in xindy/asy builds (in order to use freshly built
binaries for what they need), I mount external TL2009 tree inside clean
environment at that point, attach there freshly built 2010/dev
binaries, set PATH and proceed to xindy/asy build; then, new .fmt files
are created inside clean environment, xindy/asy compile, and the whole
artificial construction can be dismantled after that.
I used this method in the past to run tests, but after r16500 it is not
possible.
This is not perfect, but is it that complicated to provide a small
chunk of TL tree in order to use TL2010 binaries (e.g. latex, pdftex)
as you just described?
