[texworks] writing format of the editor

What is included as "format characteristics"?

Edit > Preferences (and its tabs) sets the editor _default_ options for 
all new documents from then on -- but not the current document.  The 
various choices in the menus only affect editor options for the current 
document.

This allows one to set "sticky" options as default, but change them 
temporarily when needed.
