What is included as "format characteristics"?<br>
<br>
Edit > Preferences (and its tabs) sets the editor _default_
options for all new documents from then on -- but not the current
document. The various choices in the menus only affect editor
options for the current document.<br>
<br>
This allows one to set "sticky" options as default, but change them
temporarily when needed.<br>
