[texworks] texworks hangs

When I open a file with Texworks I can edit the file etc but when I try 
to compile, say, using pdflatex the program hangs with no output shown 
in the console.  However if I run miktex-pdflatex  on the file from the 
command line then this completes successfully. Help!
