Friedrich Vosberg,

As Bruno reported, TeXShop adds the extension .tex to any file
it first saves UNLESS a different extension is selected in the
Save Dialog. This is a feature of Cocoa. It happens automatically
and is not governed by any code in the source file.

In the Finder's "Settings" file, you can set various preferences,
using one of four icons at the top. The last of these is titled
"Advanced" and in the resulting list of boxes, the first is
"Show all filename extensions." When you first set up a brand
new Mac, this item is off. Selecting it will show all program
extensions.

Whether TeXShop extensions are shown in the Finder is
controlled by the Finder, and no TeXShop source code is
involved. But extensions are certainly shown if you view
the file system using Terminal.
