Barbara Beeton has an extraordinary clinic eye ---indeed, Emacs AUCTeX 
was trying to point me to the error:

> A \newline or \\ command appears between paragraphs, where it makes no
> sense. If you're trying to ``leave a blank line'', use a \vspace
> command

but I couldn't find were the offending \\ was coming from, but as soon 
as I deleted the second \\ where she said, your document compiled 
without a problem.
