dvipdfm is not the only way to produce .pdf: you can use pdflatex or produce
a .ps file with dvips and then use ps2pdf.  I've just tried all three; yours
gives the error, the others don't - you'll have to look at the dvipdfm
manual or use one of the two alternatives.
