[texhax] Translation of fixed words in the bibliography

I'm using the package custom-bib (makebst using the master file merlin.mbs) to 
customize a bibliography style.

My problem is with the fixed expressions "edited by", "PhD thesis" and so on. 
I'm writing a document in portuguese, so I need these words to be translated.

I defined the file portuges.mbs as the 'language file' while using makebst but 
it didn't work. I don't know if the problem is specific for the file 
portuges.mbs or if it's common to all languages.

I'm looking for someone that can help me with this or know another way to 
translate these words in the bibliography.
