(Is pdftex to be deprecated and replaced by luatex? No, pdftex is not and will not be "deprecated". Both will continue to exist for the foreseeable future. People who like/need luatex can use it. There is no problem there. For typesetting normal documents, i.e., almost everything, the conventional limits of the other TeX engines are not an issue. -k
