[tex-eplain] \newfam and \ifx

Hi,

I encounter a strange issue. For capacity reasons, I would like to load a
new font family only when a certain criterion is met. However

\def\oui{oui}
\def\criterion{oui}
\ifx\criterion\oui
\else
\newfam ...
\fi

Does not work inasmuch the new family is nevertheless loaded.
Is there an explanation?
