I just came along an article written by Adobes fonts program manager
Thomas Pinney:
http://blogs.adobe.com/typblography/2005/10/phasing_out_typ.html
A brief abstract is: Postscript Type1 may rest in peace, it's no longer
supported. Adobe is focussing on OpenType.
No need to tell, that I am a happy and even proud user of pdfTeX.
Espacially the microtype feature makes pdfTeX unreplacable at the
moment. Nonetheless I get the impression good old TeX-Project is once
again in danger of drifting into isolation if we fail to integrate OpenType.
As a Mac-user I have the choice to use XeTeX /or/ the microtypographic
extensions, most (90–95%) of the users don't have this ugly choice, they
struggle with type1 and ttf.
I believe it is one of the most important developments of pdfTeX to
integrate OpenType support. This could, and I think it /should/ be
actively and financially supported by the TUGs.
I'd appreciate any comments espacially affirmative ones ;-)
Georg
