building g sis normally not a problem (one needs a few extra libs which
are reported by the configure script); the biggest hassle is to make
sure that teh new gs ends up on the right place (i.e. is seen instead of
the old one); one problem is that gs cannot locate the fonts (one time i
had to copy the fonts from my windows machine to the linux server to get
it working); afaik gs8.50+ compiles ok (done it a few times last month)

binaries can be fetched from the tug server (using rsync); since the
pool files are in another tree, one has to make sure that they match
(here i always keep corresponding binaries and pool files together which
lessens the pain)

i have 8.52 (didn't yet look for 8.53)

the problem with gs is that one has to locate the beta tree (it always
takes me some googling -)

btw, 8.53 is needed for more tricky pdf (with type three resources); a
few weeks ago resource problems showed up and Hartmut made sure that big
was reported and fixed.
