[pdftex] otf fonts in pdftex

Hi all,

from old pstings on the pdftex list I get the impression that it is 
possible
to use .otf (OpenType/Type1) fonts. I created .vf and .tfm files and now
have a line in my .map file like

zzz8 AGaramondPro-Regular <AGaramondPro-Regular.otf

unfortunately pdftex produces:

kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600 
AGaramondPro-Regular
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for AGaramondPro-Regular.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.

instead of embedding the .otf

What should I do differently?
