DvA> Hi all,

DvA> from old pstings on the pdftex list I get the impression that it is
DvA> possible

DvA> have a line in my .map file like

DvA> zzz8 AGaramondPro-Regular <AGaramondPro-Regular.otf

DvA> unfortunately pdftex produces:

DvA> kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600
DvA> AGaramondPro-Regular
DvA> mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for AGaramondPro-Regular.
DvA> kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.

DvA> instead of embedding the .otf

DvA> What should I do differently?

looks like your .map is not read at all by pdftex.

If it is read, try to rename .otf to .ttf, I beg that pdftex determines
the type of handling from the filename extension, and that OTF is just a
special case of TTF.
