[pdftex] The manual

I am having trouble printing out the pdftex user manual. It looks fine 
on screen, but it will not print out properly at all. There is global 
font substitution (Adobe Serif) and many words overprint so that lines 
can't be read. This is my second go, and the same result both times.

Is it possible that the fonts have not been properly embedded and 
subsetted? I'd appreciate any help here.
