Thanks for all your comments.

Afraid I have fallen back on the equivalent of the ship-wrecked mariners' 
"eating the cabin boy".

I deleted Portuguese, Swedish, Italian - no good.
Deleted Spanish as well -no good.
Deleted Russian as well -worked.
Then added back in Spanish - still works.

So I can do Ukrainian and Spanish ... but no much else.
