[pdftex] Umlaut hyphenation without T1 fontenc

Hello,

How can I get
\hyphenation{Schwer-be-sch\"a-dig-ten} (given the hyphenation is correct ;o) 
to work with pdftex without calling \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} (bad resolution 
...)?
