[OS X TeX] email

You cannot rely on the complete set of your addressee's e-mail clients doing the right thing.  I'm
using Apple Mail in dark mode, so your equation appeared as black on very dark grey. For me, the png failed because you had a transparent background. Which illustrates what a slippery little problem this can be.

I think you are on the right track with LaTeXit. Depending on the purpose of your message, including the LaTeXit source and attaching an image or pdf result might be as close as you can get to keeping them all happy.
