Hi Joseph,

I suspect "the last time you had a Mac" was a long time ago. The TeX Dist structure was invented by Gerben Wierda and Jerome Laurens when tetex ended and MacTeX switched to installing the complete TeX Live. I gave a talk about it at the San Diego Conference, 2007. In the talk, I explained why I was against it. Turned out to be a bad case of paranoia.

This year there was a delay of only a few hours between the appearance of the pretest and the appearance of MacTeX, but this delay is necessary because I use the pretest to make MacTeX. Our web page explains both install methods, and indeed the install script is used on the DVD because it doesn't have room for two separate copies of TeX Live.
