[OS X TeX] strange biblatex error - should I run mktexlsr?

To begin, there’s a question as to which kpsewhich is being used! I have some TeX stuff installed in MacPorts (inside /opt).
locate kpsewhich
Output includes:
/opt/local/bin/kpsewhich
/opt/local/libexec/texlive/binaries/kpsewhich
/opt/local/libexec/texlive/texbin/kpsewhich
/usr/local/texlive/2020/bin/x86_64-darwin/kpsewhich
But this looks OK:
which kpsewhich
/Library/TeX/texbin/kpsewhich
And, indeed:
kpsewhich biblatex.sty
/usr/local/texlive/2020/texmf-dist/tex/latex/biblatex/biblatex.sty
