[OS X TeX] TeX Live Utility - fails to update infrastructure - cannot find TeX Live root

I'm running TeX Live Utility Version 1.19, with TeX Live 2014, under OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks). 

When I just opened the TeX Live Utility, it informed me there was a critical update of the infrastructure (texlive.infra), which I proceeded in the usual way to update from within the app. The update failed. I've never encountered this before.
What could be wrong?

NOTE: But I _can_ see value of SELFAUTOPARENT from a Terminal command line:
