Presumingly. I think the problem can be caused from environment
variables. Those with names like LANG or LC_<some keyword> can
influence the way a name with 8-bit characters is treated. To find
this you could run in a shell in Terminal on both Macs:
env | egrep 'LC_|LANG'
Another try would be this "env.engine" file for TeXShop. Run it on
some (La)TeX file.
