Not dumb at all.

    mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for hlcrf8r.

As Andreas suggested, this is almost certainly a map file problem.
pdftex/dvips/whatever don't know that Lucida is a type1, so they try to
generate bitmaps.

I'm not sure of the recommended way to enable new map files on gwTeX,
whether there is a GUI for it (maybe in TeXShop?), or whether you run
updmap from the command line.  Maybe there is something in the gwTeX
docs / web site?  I'd be curious to know :).

Sorry I don't have the actual answer.  Let me know if you're still
stymied, and I can try to pursue.
