  What do you mean by “true way”?  Patrick's sample shows the best
possible way: you just use UTF-8 encoding and OpenType fonts.  On the
other hand, what you did originally used the tricks that were developed
for 8-bit TeX engines, and it's a bad idea to use them in LuaTeX
(although they may work to some extent).
