[l2h] re-post: numbered filename sequences

I posted something to this effect a while ago, and it prompted no response.

When you process, say, a multi-page ps file and get a bunch of png's, 
they are numbered file1.png, file2, ..., file9, file10, file11, ..., 
file 100, ... .  This is inconvenient for batch processing, since 
they are not sorted correctly.  Can an option be added to zero pad so 
we get

file001
file010
file100

?
