This is not an answer to your question, but a question of my own.
What are the current differences between fpTeX and MiKTeX?

I tried both some time ago and both were very good. I eventually
started using fpTeX because life was too full and busy to keep
two separate systems up to date and fpTeX was updating pdftex a
little more quickly at that time. (Though my impression not
too long after was that this changed and MiKTeX also updated
pdftex within a very short tine of new releases of pdftex---I
stayed on the MiKTeX mailing list longer than I stayed using
the distribution.)

My impression then was that the main differences between the
distributions were 1) the dvi viewers, 2) fpTeX's close
relationship to teTeX, which is something of a standard on
UNIX, and 3) MiKTeX's ease of setup. Since that time fpTeX
has also a similar setup program. So I'm a bit curious as to
why someone would choose to use one of the distributions
and the viewer from the other distribution.

Could readers of the MiKTeX list who have some view please
cross post to the fptex list. (And I suppose vice versa, in case
anyone on the MiKTeX list is interested.)

Finally, my experience is that both of these distributions are
excellent, and I'm very grateful to the authors of each. The few
comparisons I've seen made in the past have been made in a very fair
and indeed friendly way, and I trust this will continue. (If
only to prevent me for feeling guilty for raising the issue.)
