[dvipdfmx] XeLaTeX + hyperref size of the boxed arround hyperlinks

Hi,

I recently switched from LaTeX to XeLaTeX and am currently writing the first document with the whole linking stuff (hyperlinks from one page to another) within. Part of this is a table of contents. This was when I noticed this:

(with pdflatex)

while with xelatex it looks like this
[2021-01-03_01-25.png]

since the latter doesn't look so nice, I tried to reduce the size of that boxes and when I found (with the help of tex.stackexchange https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/577314/xelatex-hyperref-bounding-box) the hyperref option pdflinkmargin which I set to a negative value.
This results in an appearance like this (with pdflinkmargin=-1pt)

which I think looks ok (not nice but ok).

The trouble I still have with this solution is that links to e.g. footnotes look like this

Since (like it can be seen on tex.stackexchange) someone gave me the hint that maybe someone on this mailing list might know something regarding this problem,  the big question for me is, is there a way to get results like with "plain" LaTeX? Or is there a way to reduce the horizontal and/or vertical pdflinkmargin separately?
