1.) It is a problem with math rather than footnotes,
I have modified the subject so that other readers
are more attracted by your posting.
2.) I have found it useful simply to google for any error message
I get (usually with Linux rather than TeX). For your one,

I think before any list reader spends any more time with the
problem, you should try the workarounds that were discussed there.
