The CTAN catalogue mentions subcaption
(http://www.ctan.org/pkg/subfig) but it can't declare a package
"deprecated" only because there is small clash with some other
package. After all one of the package could add a suitable
correction.

Also people using a package last updated in 2005 should simply do
some search before using it. In a decentralized system like latex
you have to do a bit homework as you would when looking for an app
or some other program.
