[texhax] inserting text in an enumeration list

Is there a way to insert some text, treated as an ordinary paragraph
or otherwise outside the constraints of the enumerate environment,
between two items?

What I have in mind is creating a numbered list using the enumeration
environment, but putting either some headings or some explanatory
text before groups of items, without disturbing the automatic
numbering of the items. I realize that in theory this can be done by
hand by ending the enumeration but then setting the appropriate
counter (by hand) to the next value; however, I am thinking in terms
of a subgrouping the exercises at the end of each section of a long
book into (in my case) Practical Exercises, Theoretical Exercises,
and Challenge Problems. But I don't want to number them separately.
This is a bit like the function of \intertext, but this as I
understand it works only after a \ or \\.
